The start was given on 1st January 1952, when a Scientific-editing and Map-assembling department at the Chief Geodesy and Cartography Administration was established. In 1953 it was transformed into a design organization Kartproekt, which till 1971 realizes editing, assembling and drawing up of varying cartographic production. The pre-printing work and the printing process itself were carried out at Map factory, another organization, residing in the same building. In mid-1971 both organizations combine to form a Comprehensive institute for cartographic research and design.
On 31st March 1993, following the requirements of the Transformation and privatization of state and municipality owned enterprises act, the Institute was transformed into a single-owner limited liability company with state property. The name given was CARTOGRAPHIA Ltd.
